Punjab Clamps Down Amid Protests; Schools and Colleges Closed Province-wide
The Punjab government has taken strict steps to stop growing unrest. This is due to expected protests from PTI supporters and upset students. On Thursday, police used tear gas to push back protesters, including young students.
The government faces a big challenge. They need to handle PTI’s nationwide protest and student anger over a female student's treatment in Lahore. They have banned public gatherings in Punjab for two days under Section 144.
Educational Institutions Ordered to Shut
All schools, colleges, and universities in Punjab are now closed. This decision was made due to student protests. The protests started after false reports of a sexual assault at a Lahore college.
Even though the assault was found to be false, the protests continued. They have spread to other cities too.
Protestors Clashed With Police
In Rawalpindi, around 380 protesters were arrested. Initially, 150 were arrested for property damage and attacking police. Later, 200 more were caught from CCTV footage.
Students in Rawalpindi's Commercial Market Satellite Town and 6th Road clashed with police. They blocked roads, threw stones at cars, and set fires.
Arrests and Crackdowns
Law enforcement in Rawalpindi arrested more people as tensions rose. Eight cases were filed in six police stations. More arrests are expected as they review CCTV footage.
In Jhelum, nearly 50 students were released after a magistrate dropped charges. This was a brief calm, but an appeal is being prepared.
Internet and WhatsApp Disruptions
WhatsApp and internet services were disrupted in Punjab. This happened during the protests. The outages also affected Sindh, including Karachi.
The Government’s Stance
The Punjab government says its actions are for public safety. They believe without these measures, violence could get worse.
The situation is tense, and it's unclear if the government's actions will calm things down. Punjab is in the middle of a big storm, with protests and uncertainty everywhere.
